What is Surround Sound?

Commonly referred to as 5.1, surround sound is a way of delivering filtered audio tracks to a listening arena. The intent of surround sound is to simulate a real life audio environment.  If a movie is set in the park during summer you would expect to hear the wind in the trees, chirping of the birds, kids playing on a swing set.  Surround sound delivers those sounds in a way that is consistent with how they are seen.  If I am sitting on the park bench having a conversation with someone and their are kids playing behind me, I would expect to hear them behind me, not in front of me.  The processing of surround sound takes that into account and delivers the audio tracks where they should be so that what you see is what you hear.

The home theater receiver is the brains of the system which has individual control over each speaker, telling it what to play and when.  A surround sound system is only as good as the receiver will allow.  When purchasing a home theater system take careful consideration into choosing a receiver.  Receivers have a long life so buy one with the intention of having it for many years.
